Property In Punjab

Hello Guys,

Any form of measurement guides you to construct or build an item or structure in a perfect way. Similarly, land measurement is a general terminology used to describe in best possible manner the application and theory of measurement of land. When people resort to taking this step, it clearly helps them to understand in clear terms the finer aspects involved with a land.

The exact word is keela and not kila.

A Keela is the same as an acre. The only difference is that a Keela is measured in a rectangle rather than as a square.

Paili means cultivated land and used to be used to distinguish between wasteland and cultivated land. Zameen just means land, Paili means land that is cultivated and Banjar means wasteland unfit for cultivation. Nowadays as most land is cultivated in Punjab, Paili is just coming to mean land.

These are the basic land measurements used in Punjab. Beginning with the smallest

A Karam is 5.5 sq ft

9 Karams make one Marla ( 272.25 sq ft )

20 Marlas make one Kanaal ( 5445 sq ft )

8 Kanaals make one Keela ( 43,560 sq ft )

A Keela is measured rectangularly - it is made of 36 Karams x 40 Karams or 198 feet x 220 feet = 43,560 sq feet.

Kothis are measured in Kanaals. Most are 2-4 Kanaals but the big ones can be anything from 4-6 kanaals.

These are the modern measures of land. Some of the older measures were-;

Biswa - 12 Biswas made 1 Kanaal

Bigha - 20 Biswas made 1 Bigha
